One of my favourite bloggers, Kris Carr [kriscarr.com and Crazy Sexy Cancer (her docu and books)], posted an article on her blog this weekend that I thought was extremely important and wanted to share.
In her ‘Natural Deodorant Smackdown,’ Kris outlines why we sweat, why sweat is smelly, the difference between antiperspirants and deodorants, and why we recommend people search out a natural deodorant (and which ones actually work!). She does an excellent job of explaining that a lot of commercial brands have tons of dangerous or unstudied chemical ingredients in them – just like on your food labels, if you can’t pronounce it you probably shouldn’t put it on or in your body.
It’s important for all of us to understand that what we put on our skin ends up in our bodies – and the underarms are no exception. This is a very delicate area of the body. Under each arm you have a few superficial lymph nodes, and up to 30+ deep lymph nodes (under the deltoid and pectoral muscles) which drain the breast tissue and upper limbs in men and women. The lymph nodes connect the lymphatic flow of your entire body – one of the reasons why when they check lymph nodes for cancer, if they find nodes that are positive the cancer case is much more serious. Needless to say, keeping harmful chemicals away from this area is in our best interest.
Using Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Database, and her own study techniques (!) Kris made the following infographic complete with unicorn rating scale:
She also made a little video on how she went about making the infographic here:
In case you’re wondering, I’ve been using Soapwalla’s Deodorant Cream for the past few months and love it. It’s a bit odd to have to dip your fingers into a cream and put it under your arms at first, but it smells lovely and lasts through the day. There are several other great options on her list, and other bloggers have added their two cents in her comments section.
Hope you enjoy Kris’ review as much as I did!
